In the Beginning Vol. 2 continues the treasure trove of the early works of Declaime & Madlib, the longtime collaborators who helped usher in a new sound and style from the city of Oxnard, California.
This collection is brimming with previously unheard tracks from this beyond-creative duo that blends hip-hop with funk, jazz, soul, and psychedelia to lay the groundwork for so many other emcees and producers. For Declaime (a/k/a Dudley Perkins), this series serves as a way to honour his friends and the city that raised them. He shouts out names like The Almighty Metaphor (aka MED), Oh No the Disrupt, DJ Romes, Kazi, and more, who he says “created a lane for the city of Oxnard to get the recognition it deserves.” Some of them make an appearance in one form or another on this collection, too—Romes, for example, mastered the project—that compiles 10 previously lost tracks that were recorded from 1993 to ‘96.
In The Beginning Vol. 2 is entirely produced by Madlib, who provided all the cuts as well. His instrumentals are on that raw and dusty vibe as they move freely through genres and sounds, like on standout cuts “Bandwagon,”WLIX,” and “Signs (feat. Wildchild).” Those are all highlights for Declaime, too, and they demonstrate his ability to blend his observations of the world with bravado and third-eye insights. Even as young kids just getting their feet wet in the studio, these two were firmly on their path.

Lateralus is the third studio album by Tool originally released on May 15, 2001. By the release of Tool's third album, the band had moved far past sub-three-minute songs with in-your-face lyrics, like 1992's anti-censorship quick hit Hush. By contrast, Lateralus' nine-and-a-half-minute title track is based, both in its time...

It’s likely that Dave East was both ready and willing to lock in for a full-length Harry Fraud produced album well before he heard Fraud’s work with Jim Jones (The Fraud Department) and Benny the Butcher (The Plugs I Met 2). But it’s just as likely that the synergy and flawless execution of those projects couldn’t have hurt East’s inclination.
Fraud shows up for East on Hoffa the same way he did for Jones and Benny, finding a sturdy balance between moody synth lines, obscure rock samples, and ’90s-hip-hop drum patterns to act as an idyllic backdrop for East’s hand-to-hand street-life memories, basketball references, and straight-faced acknowledgment of the way drugs have affected his own family.
Fellow barsmiths Jim Jones, G Herbo, Benny the Butcher, and Curren$y round out the features, but longtime Dave East fans might be most excited to hear a new verse from Kiing Shooter, the Queens-hailing Dave East associate who passed away in 2020 following complications from COVID-19.

While Eto’s concept album Eto Brigante is definitely one of the highlights of his discography, one wonders what the project would have sounded like if the whole album was produced by a single beatmaker. Well, as good as the original is, listeners now have the chance to hear the lyrics buoyed by the singular vision of German producer TrickyTrippz. More than a remix album, this body of work aims to intensify Eto’s rap retelling of the classic gangster film Carlitos Way.

MF DOOM's debut album was a complete game-changer when it was unleashed on unsuspecting hip hop heads. Backpacker types immediately became enamoured with DOOM's left-field beats which drew upon obscure funk, soul, jazz and cartoon/comic book samples, providing the perfect backdrop for the masked MC's abstract wordplay and complex rhymes. Just remember it's all caps when you spell the man's name!

The super group Deltron 3030 is composed of producer Dan the Automator, rapper Del tha Funkee Homosapien and DJ Kid Koala and sometimes features guest artists who also take on varying futuristic pseudonyms. Originally released in 2000 on the now-defunct 75ARK record label, this hip hop concept album was released the same year as the Gorillaz’ first 12″ and is on a similar plane. Following the release of Deltron 3030, all three members participated in the Gorillaz’ self-titled debut album. With Del aka Deltron Zero on vocals, Dan the Automator aka The Cantankerous Captain Aptos on production, and Kid Koala aka Skiznoid the Boy Wonder on turntables, this album takes the listener on a paranoid journey set in a dystopian year 3030 dealing with viruses, the apocalypse, an oppressive government, and a war waged against a huge company called the Corporate Bank of Time that rules the universe, all to the well-crafted and consistent musical backing of the Automator. Appearances by Damon Albarn (The Gorillaz, Blur), Prince Paul, Peanut Butter Wolf, DJ Money Mark, Paul Barman, Mark Bell (Bjork, production), Sean Lennon, and Mr. Lif compliment Del’s vocal style and add the right amount of flavor to this classic period piece.

Everybody remembers KMD for launching a young Zev Love X’s career, during which he became known as MF DOOM. But the group’s work is not to be overlooked: Mr. Hood is a classic piece of '90s hip hop with a tonne of twisted sampling, tight flows and catchy beats in general. Part of your hip hop education, son!

Finished in 1998, unreleased until 2000, and featuring reworked material that dates back to the trio's earliest years, Fantastic Vol. 2 is practically a retrospective of Slum Village's career. After producer Jay Dee started working with A Tribe Called Quest, the hip-hop press was anxious to label this Detroit trio the second coming of Tribe. In truth, it was something much more interesting. At a time when hip-hop was obsessed with singles, Slum Village was all about song sketches. At a time when the public demanded bombast from its artists, Slum Village embodied introversion and intimacy. At a time when shiny music was in fashion, Slum Village made songs cloaked in the dirt and dark mystery of Detroit. Fantastic Vol. 2 has indelible beats and stellar raps, but beyond that, it's more than anything a master class in mood. The song structures are often faint, but had the group worked these sketches into conventional singles they'd lose the ghostly, sexy, understated vibe that is this album's essence. 'Players,' 'Tell Me,' and 'Untitled / Fantastic' have all since become underground classics.

To celebrate the Love Record Stores event Mr Bongo have created a special edition of the album. Pressed on clear vinyl, this single LP collectors’ item features their favourite tracks from the original album. Carolina is the Brazilian virtuoso Seu Jorge's debut full-length album from 2002. Originally released under the title ‘Samba Esporte Fino’, its release and subsequent international acclaim dovetailed with Seu Jorge’s ascent into movie stardom. He is probably best known outside of Brazil for his work on Wes Anderson’s 2004 film 'The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’, in which he played a starring role and his Portuguese covers of David Bowie records were a highlight of the soundtrack. Having initially found fame thanks to his standout performance as Knockout Ned in the revered movie ‘City of God’. Carolina would cement his global fame and launch an illustrious musical career that has earnt him a Grammy nomination.
Co-produced by Mario Caldatto of Beastie Boys and Planet Hemp fame, the album presented a vibrant, contemporary combination of samba and funk, backed by guitar, bass, drums, percussion, and horns. It kicks off with one of Seu's most loved tracks 'Carolina', an anthemic feel-good classic with timeless energy, ending in a sing-along crescendo. Other highlights included the Brazilian-Funk of 'Mangueira' reminiscent in places of Tim Maia with its 80s inspired vibe, and the catchy jazzy-samba of 'Tu Queria' which always ignites the dance floor.

You never hear anyone asking for a The Woodentops reunion but they were quite major players in the UK indie scene of the mid '80s. Leader Rolo McGinty went off at a tangent with this 1995 album as Pluto which saw him head off in an electronica / trance / house direction. The end result sounding more like Larry Heard or Terrence Parker than The Housemartins. Much deserved re-issue.
